Choosing service providers can be overwhelming, especially when you don’t quite know what you’re looking for.

Shopping vendors is kind of like hunting down the perfect outfit for your high school reunion—a little nerve-racking, but you’re confident you’ll know it when you see it.

Of course, this strategy has serious backfire potential. How many of us don’t find the right dress, suit that fits, or shoes to go with it before we’ve run out of time?

At this point, all you can do is ‘settle.’

I encourage you to take a look at our Pre-Bid checklist. In it, we’ve outlined all the boxes you need to check so you can avoid that ‘know it when you see it’ thing and organize a more reliable strategy. And while we’ve created this guide around landscaping, you will find it helps you evaluate other types of vendors, too.

A lot of people are skeptical about adding all-natural components to their landscaping programs because of cost. After all, if you go to the grocery store, Home Depot, or a cosmetic counter, the organic options always cost more, right?

And in the interest of full disclosure, our organic programs cost more, too. But it doesn’t take long for you to recoup that investment, and once you cross that threshold, your investment starts to yield returns.

Here’s how:

  1. Organic landscaping can save commercial properties money in the long run by reducing the use of expensive chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides.
  2. Organic methods focus on improving soil health through natural composting, mulching, and the use of native plants, which require less water and maintenance.Download this checklist to find out if your landscaping company is missing something!
  3. In a balanced ecosystem, organic landscaping minimizes pest infestations, reducing the need for costly chemical treatments. Healthier soil also supports stronger plant growth, leading to fewer replacements and repairs.
  4. Organic practices conserve water through improved soil structure, reducing the need for irrigation systems and lowering water bills.
  5. Some municipalities offer incentives for businesses that adopt eco-friendly landscaping techniques, further lowering costs.

Although your initial investment may be higher, the long-term savings from reduced chemical use, water conservation, and lower maintenance make organic landscaping a good choice for you—and for your clients.

I know we talk a lot about sustainable landscaping, but we don’t actually make higher revenues on our organic programs. We do it because we care about the planet. We feel that as landscape professionals, we are in a unique position to offer choices that are more healthy for our environment.
